Sometimes I don’t have time to plan or run to the store to pickup supplies for an activity or craft. Sidewalk chalk is something I always have on hand and it is so versatile! Sidewalk chalk can be used for more than just hopscotch and obstacle courses. We’ve been using sidewalk chart to explore art, color and shapes.
Rollable Sidewalk Chalk Paint
I LOVE exploring the Walmart craft supplies aisle. There are so many fun and affordable art tools. I found mini craft foam paint rollers that are perfect for little hands. I then made some chalk “paint” and let the kids design masterpieces outside.
Sidewalk Chalk Paint Recipe
- 1 part cornstarch
- 3 parts water
- 2 parts grated chalk dust (about one half of a stick of chalk). Buy chalk in bulk here.
- Zester / Grater for making chalk dust
- Muffin Tin or small bowls for mixing
- Mini craft foam roller
- Paintbrushes. Chubby paintbrushes are ideal.
We used a zester to grate the chalk into a fine dust. The zester was easier for my kids to grate the chalk, but a traditional grater would also work well! I mixed one spoonful of cornstarch, some water and the chalk dust inside of a muffin tin. You want the consistency of the chalk mixture to be thinner than traditional paint so that it can be rolled or painted. Cornstarch is a thickener, so you might need to mix the chalk paint from time to time right before rolling.

Sidewalk Chalk “Stained Glass”
I used blue tape to create a stained glass design. The kids went to work rolling chalk paint over the blue tape. They loved revealing their artwork as they pulled up the blue tape. It was also an opportunity for me to describe stained glass art to my child. He had no idea what it was, but now he recognizes stained glass as we pass churches and other historic buildings.

Sidewalk Chalk Dust Art
We had some left over chalk dust and I was immediately inspired by glitter and glue activities we’ve done in the past. I grabbed some white school glue and cardstock from the craft cabinet. I drew a rainbow with school glue and we decorated the rainbow with chalk dust.

Turns out chalk is a perfect medium for super simple art activities. My kids also loved the reveal and end result! We will definitely be doing this chalk art activity again! It would be perfect for creating ocean scenes, landscapes, space art and more!
