It can be so difficult to shop for mom or grandma! I wanted to gift them something meaningful, but also practical. This idea just popped into my mind when I lost my car key. It was a blocky key that I probably would not have lost if I had a keychain to help weigh it down in my purse. Thus, I combined the practicality of a keychain with the sentimentality of a child’s handprint. This keepsake keychain craft is fun for kids and parents to make together. It will make the best homemade Mother’s or Father’s Day gift ever!

Handprint Keepsake Keychain Supplies
While this craft uses some untraditional materials, you’ll find that they will be helpful and fun for other crafts as well. I look forward to using the extra materials for future crafts. Here is everything you need:
- Plastic Shrink Sheet Keychain Set (this set from Amazon includes the jump rings)
- Acrylic craft paint
- Crimp beads
- Needle nose pliers
- Letter beads and beading string if you want to include a custom message
- Fine Line Sharpie if you would like to initial and date each handprint
- Hole puncher
How to Craft a Handprint Keepsake Keychain
Handprint a plastic shrink sheet. Punch a hole at the top of the handprint, or in the ring finger.

Bake the handprint at 300 degrees for about 2 minutes. The shrink sheet might twitch and curl, but it will flatten out when it is finished shrinking.

Attach the handprint to the keychain using the included jump ring. Open the jump ring using pliers and press it closed around the last link of the keychain.

Create your custom beaded message. My kids wanted to keep it simple, so we spelled out “I love Grandma.” I even included a cute heart charm on the end. I stringed the heart charm first. Then I folded the string over and strung the letter beads from the last letter to the first letter. Double threading the beads ensures the string won’t break in case it gets caught.

Attach the string of beads to the keychain using a crimp bead. To do this, you must first string your crimp bead. Then thread the string on the last link of the keychain and back through the crimp bead. Pull the string tight so there is no exposed string remaining. Then use the pliers to crimp the bead closed. Cut any excess string.

Now you have an adorable, homemade and practical gift for all the women in your life. Dad and grandpa are going to be so jealous, you’ll have to make them one too!
